An Exercise in Self Worth

I received an enquiry recently from a client looking for an asset strategist who stated that they were willing to pay £52 per hour. Which actually is an extremely low rate given the nature of such complex undertakings.
A day later that prospective client called me back to say; “hmnnnnnn we’ve revisited that package of work and can only afford £27 per hour now”.
To which I replied; “well look all you seem to be doing is talking about money, why don’t we simply sit down and talk about how I can help you”.
So we agreed to meet and I arrived in good time for our 3pm appointment, accepting a cup of tea from my hosts upon my arrival.
Shortly thereafter being walked to a freezing cold, dirty and tatty meeting room, whereupon the clients representative finally appeared at 3.30pm.
Upon introducing himself the guy then said; “yes thanks for coming in we’ve revisited this role again and can only afford £21 per hour now”.
To which I simply smiled albeit through gritted teeth and said; “heavens your business ethics really do resonate well with that of a cesspit don’t they?”
The guy looked at me in a highly confused manner and then dived straight into; “yes, so I’ve looked at your website and business CV, can you tell me how you’d approach a top down bottom up review of our assets?”
At which point I politely replied; “errrrrrrrr no I’m going to have to disappoint you there, because its clear to me that you can’t afford me or you simply don’t respect me. So I’m not going to sit here and waste my valuable time helping you for free”.
I paused there before saying; “However if you’d like me to help you find a suitably qualified technical clerk to help you bottom out your asset review. More than happy to help, assuming that is; we can agree a price and then firmly stick to that”.
The guy said; “how dare you, you’re taking the piss and guilty of wasting my time”. To which I firmly replied; “calm down dude, you’re really having a laugh if you think you can take the moral high ground here”.
Its safe to say that our “none meeting” ended quickly after that and to be honest I can well do without that sort of nonsense anyway. Simply because in truth meetings of that nature have nothing to do with me securing gainful business or being respected by my clients.
They’re simply a product of the psychotic market place that we all operate in these days and moreover, simply an energetic test to see if we truly believe that we are worthy of professional respect, all part of our own overall self worth.
You see; its a simple fact of life that if we don’t value ourselves or that which we bring to the market, the question is; who on earth will?
Such that whilst there’s always some give and take in every single commercial arrangement, there are no grounds for a mutually rewarding ethical arrangement where one party chooses only to engaged in; “a one way process of self interest which is nothing more than exploitation”.
That’s precisely why I rarely engage with clients these days who simply fixate upon price, choosing instead to support where I can, only those who truly understand and respect value adding service delivery. For they truly understand just how hard I work and more importantly what I’m capable of delivering.
In summation; the first principle in business as in life is that success is not simply about that business that we choose to do. For long term, its more about just how much we value our own unique self worth and for one very special reason too.
Simply because it is that measure of our own self worth and simply that alone, that sets all men apart. Given that self worth is the only true measure of our overall success in life as it is in business, nothing less and nothing more. Amen
